Stop and Thank

It's the time of year where we Americans celebrate our freedom. July 4th is our most patriotic holiday and it demonstrates our resolve to remain on the forefront of promoting a democratic society. But, how did we get there and how do we stay?

This isn't the forum to discuss political issues. We all have our opinions regarding the National dilemma and the various wars in which we are engaged. I'd be happy to discuss those on a personal basis with anyone who wishes to do so. However, there is another issue that does apply to this organization and we can approach it in this forum.

Our freedom, which is garnered by battles fought mostly on foreign land, is maintained here everyday by heroes on our own soil, by firefighters and law enforcement officers. In addition, many of our local firefighters and law enforcement officers are also called to duty to join our military abroad.

Those who are responsible to protect the citizens of our majestic land accomplish this without fanfare and without regard for their own safety. We call these servants to aid us when we are in danger. With homes ablaze or with armed assailants in our presence, we cry out. Those who respond come without question. The pay, which is certainly comfortable, isn't enough for the job at hand. But, come they do. Bullets flying or buildings falling, they enter the danger zone and perform diligently. Sadly, some of the bravest fall in the line of duty. Let's not forget the men and women who have laid down their lives to protect others.

The next time you get a chance, stop and thank those who put their lives on the line everyday. When we celebrate our freedom, celebrate ALL who have lost their lives for that freedom, both abroad and locally.

God bless this country and god bless the men and women who protect it...

...And NEVER FORGET...
